HOW WE CHOOSE OUR PRODUCTS

1. With a focus on well-designed products that people need. Of course some people’s needs are other people’s “like to have,” but our goal is to focus on products that serve a purpose and that are well-designed to boot. Well-designed meaning that the designer thought it through from start to finish, it functions well and is not clunky or awkward in use or aesthetics. We only sell things that we ourselves would buy.


2. Ethically produced products: organic, fair-trade, made with recycled or recyclable materials, second-hand, handmade, rapidly renewable, made by socially responsible small businesses, etc. Hard to find them all, but we our best and constantly look for better options or work with our vendors to improve their products.


3. Buying local: because $0.45 of a dollar stays local when you buy local (vs. $0.10 when you don’t) and buying locally means less pollution created by transportation (which accounts for 40% of all carbon dioxide emissions.) Again, not always possible to buy locally manufactured, but we do our best and encourage our suppliers to think locally for their supplies as well. If we have two similar products but one is “prettier” and the other is “more local” we always opt for the more local product.
